Since joining Vision Northumberland as a Technology Enablement Coordinator, I have been immersed in technology that has been both impressive and cutting edge. In fact, some technology (like the Ray-Ban Meta AI Glasses) has been able to change people’s lives. Current technology seems to be advancing faster than ever, particularly with the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI).
In many areas, recent developments have brought far greater change than the smaller, gradual improvements seen in previous generations of technology. However, the technology I am discussing today is impressive and cutting-edge, yet it is built on something many of us have used for years: Bluetooth.
What is Auracast?
Auracast is a new way of broadcasting sound using Bluetooth technology. Most traditional Bluetooth connections work between two paired devices. For example, a mobile phone may be paired with one set of headphones or hearing aids.
Auracast works differently. It allows one source to broadcast audio to a theoretically unlimited number of compatible listening devices within range. Those devices could include hearing aids, cochlear implants, earbuds, headphones or dedicated receivers.
Bluetooth LE Audio is the next-generation Bluetooth standard that fundamentally changes how devices transmit sound. It uses a new, highly efficient codec called LC3 to deliver better audio quality while consuming significantly less battery power.
Unlike classic Bluetooth, which usually connects paired devices directly, Auracast broadcast audio allows a single source to stream sound to a theoretically unlimited number of nearby compatible listening devices.

A venue could therefore broadcast audio from a microphone, television, public-address system or presentation directly to visitors’ listening devices. Users may then be able to select an available broadcast in a similar way to choosing a Wi-Fi network. Some broadcasts may be open, while others could require a code. Unlike traditional Bluetooth, the venue does not need to connect separately to every listener’s device. Instead, it broadcasts the audio, allowing people with compatible hearing aids, earbuds or headphones to select and listen to it.
Where will Auracast be used?
Auracast can be beneficial in many different cases. A growing number of modern hearing aids are becoming compatible with Auracast, and the technology could eventually provide a modern alternative to the hearing loop in some settings. Hearing loops remain valuable, but their performance can sometimes be affected by electrical interference, inconsistent coverage or sound spilling into nearby areas.
Auracast will not only be beneficial to hearing aid users, Headphones and earphones will also become compatible, meaning that people will get a direct feed into their ears. This will be helpful in education and could be a major gamechanger for people with ADHD, particularly those who struggle with auditory processing in noisy environments. By streaming audio directly to compatible earbuds or hearing aids, it bypasses background noise and echo, vastly improving focus and sensory regulation.

- Gyms and leisure centres

- Restaurants, cafés and pubs showing television
- Courtrooms and council chambers
- Guided-tour locations
- Workplaces and staff-training rooms
- Care homes and supported-living settings
- Reception desks and information points
- Anywhere displaying a television with the sound muted
- Venues offering translated audio or audio description
How to prepare your venue for Auracast
Auracast is still developing, so most organisations do not need to make major changes immediately. However, there are some simple steps they can take now.
Start by learning where Auracast could be useful in your building. This might include meeting rooms, reception areas, televisions, community spaces, theatres or places of worship. When replacing audio equipment, hearing aids, televisions or sound systems, check whether new products support Bluetooth LE Audio and Auracast. Choosing compatible equipment gradually could help avoid unnecessary upgrades later.
Organisations should also consider how visitors will access the broadcast. Not everyone will have compatible hearing aids or headphones straight away, so loan receivers may be useful during the transition. Clear signage and simple instructions will be important. Staff should know that Auracast is available, where it works and how visitors can receive help connecting.
Larger venues may need advice from an experienced audio or assistive-listening installer, but smaller organisations may be able to begin with a simple transmitter connected to an existing television or sound source.
The key is not to replace everything at once. It is to understand the technology, consider it when purchasing new equipment and make accessibility part of future planning.
Ultimately, preparing for Auracast means creating a reliable and inclusive service. The technology may provide the broadcast, but careful planning, clear communication and trained staff will determine whether visitors can genuinely benefit from it.
Where can I find an Auracast transmitter?
A growing number of Auracast transmitters are becoming available for homes, meeting rooms and larger public venues. Prices and capabilities vary depending on the size of the space, the audio equipment being used and the level of coverage required.
Before purchasing a transmitter, organisations should check that it is suitable for their intended setting and that it supports the audio sources they plan to use, such as a television, microphone, sound system or presentation equipment.
Some manufacturers also offer demonstration programs that allow organisations to test Auracast before deciding whether it is suitable for them.

What about people without compatible devices?
Not everyone will immediately have Auracast-compatible hearing aids, earbuds or headphones. During the transition, dedicated receivers may help people access an Auracast broadcast using existing headphones, speakers or neckloops.
Venues considering Auracast may therefore wish to provide a small number of loan receivers. The most suitable type will depend on how visitors are expected to listen and whether they use headphones, hearing aids with a telecoil, or another assistive-listening device.
Before buying receivers, organisations should check that they are compatible with the transmitter being used and are simple for visitors and staff to operate.
